Injectable fillers are the second most common minimally invasive cosmetic procedure in the U.S.

And while there are many different types of fillers in use today, more than five of the six million people who chose to get fillers in 2023 decided to go with a hyaluronic acid filler over other leading fillers.

That means 5 out of every 6 people — or 83.3% — are choosing a filler made out of hyaluronic acid.

Which brings us to the question every Nashville resident is asking:

What makes hyaluronic acid such a popular choice for fillers?

To be honest, there are plenty of reasons — including the fact that hyaluronic acid is a substance that occurs naturally in the body and has a unique ability to attract and retain water to moisturize the skin.

But there’s one thing HA fillers will always have over non-HA fillers.

And it’s the fact that hyaluronic acid can be dissolved, if needed (or wanted).

Whether you’re unimpressed with how your initial procedure went, are having second thoughts about the results of your last treatment or simply want a different look — HA fillers always come with a “Plan B.”

Hyaluronic Acid: What Is It & Why Does It Matter?

Hyaluronic acid is a substance you’ve likely heard of before.

After all, it’s found in a lot of the skincare products you use daily —- such as shampoos, lotions, makeup and moisturizers — and is even found naturally in the body, particularly in the skin, eyes and joints.

But what exactly does hyaluronic acid do for our skin?

Known simply as HA, hyaluronic acid acts as a cushion, lubricant and moisturizer that hydrates the skin by attracting and retaining moisture, which makes the skin appear plumper, smoother and more youthful.

There’s just one small problem:

As we age, the body’s natural production of hyaluronic acid decreases.

The solution? Dermal fillers

Fillers, of course, are gel-like substances injected underneath the skin to restore lost volume, smooth wrinkles, soften creases, enhance facial contours and/or increase the production of collagen and elastin.

Can Lip & Dermal Fillers Be Dissolved?

Not all dermal and lip fillers can be dissolved — but hyaluronic acid fillers can.

As we mentioned earlier, HA fillers are the most common type of filler on the market today — more so than calcium hydroxyapatite (CaHA), poly-l-lactic acid (PLLA) and polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) combined.

And one of the main reasons why is because they’re “reversible,” meaning the results are temporary.

This is possible thanks to an enzyme known as hyaluronidase — which the body naturally produces over time to break down hyaluronic acid. In other words, hyaluronidase is the kryptonite to hyaluronic acid.

Most HA fillers can last anywhere from six months to several years before dissolving naturally.

But its true shelf life could end sooner thanks to a process we like to call filler rehabilitation

Much like the hyaluronic acid found in your filler mimics the hyaluronic acid produced naturally by the body, the hyaluronidase we use to dissolve dermal fillers mimics the hyaluronidase produced by the body.

If you get to a point where you think you’ve ‘overfilled,’ filler rehabilitation can turn back the clock.

What to Expect From Filler Rehabilitation

If you're considering filler rehabilitation in Nashville, TN, you're probably wondering what the process actually looks like — and whether it's as quick, easy and straightforward as your initial filler treatment.

The good news? It absolutely is.

The rehabilitation process begins with a consultation where your healthcare provider will assess your current filler situation and discuss your goals to ensure you’re a good candidate for the procedure.

This is also where you’ll decide between a partial and full rehabilitation. Are you looking to completely dissolve all filler and start fresh? Or do you just want to reduce volume in specific areas of the face?

Either way, the actual procedure will only take about 10-15 minutes.

Your provider will clean the treatment area and apply a topical numbing cream for comfort. Then, using a fine needle, they'll inject small amounts of hyaluronidase into the areas where you want filler dissolved.

Some people will experience immediate results, but full results could take several weeks.

If you're planning to start fresh with new filler, most providers recommend waiting at least two weeks after your dissolution treatment before adding more filler to give your skin time to return to its natural state.
